Reported problem

The kitchen at a senior-living facility in Boynton Beach reported that its commercial walk-in freezer kept building frost and ice on the evaporator and was warming up. The service notes also recorded a warm, humid kitchen and frequent door openings during the day. Those operating conditions were noted as part of the service call; they were not established as the sole cause of the icing.

What we observed at the evaporator

  • Heavy frost and ice had built up on the evaporator coil, visibly obscuring the coil.
  • Frost was also present on the evaporator tubing near the existing expansion valve, which was inspected as part of the visit.
  • The existing defrost timer was an Intermatic DTAV40-series assembly.

Work performed

  • Ran a defrost to clear the observed ice buildup; the coil fins were visibly cleared during service.
  • Replaced the defrost timer with a new timer of the same model (Intermatic DTAV40 series).
  • Adjusted the defrost schedule on the new timer.
  • Took temperature checks at the evaporator while the freezer was pulling back down after defrost.

Defrost thermostat finding and planned follow-up

After the icing problem was corrected, further troubleshooting identified a defrost thermostat that was not working and remained stuck open. A ShieldVault installation is planned as part of the follow-up control work. The thermostat issue and final operating result remain open items until that work is completed and verified.
