SEER2 is the efficiency rating that replaced SEER in 2023, measured under more realistic duct-pressure conditions. Higher number, less power for the same cooling. The real question in Florida is how much higher is worth paying for.
The Florida minimum
South-region code requires 14.3 SEER2 minimum for split systems. Anything a contractor quotes below that isn't legal to install new.
Rough annual cost by rating
For a typical 1,800 sqft Port St. Lucie home running roughly 2,400 cooling hours a year:
- 14.3 SEER2: about $1,250/year in cooling
- 16 SEER2: about $1,120/year
- 18 SEER2: about $995/year
- 20+ SEER2 variable-speed: about $895/year

Doing the payback math
Take the upgrade cost, divide by the annual savings. Going from 14.3 to 16 SEER2 usually costs $800-$1,500 more and saves about $130/year — roughly a 7-10 year payback, close to the equipment's useful life. Going from 14.3 to a variable-speed 18-20 SEER2 costs $3,000-$5,000 more and saves $250-$350/year, so the payback rarely closes on efficiency alone.
The reason to go higher anyway
Humidity. Variable-speed and two-stage systems run longer at low capacity, which pulls far more moisture out of the air than a single-stage unit that blasts and shuts off. In a Treasure Coast summer that's the difference between 55% and 65% indoor humidity — comfort, mold risk, and how cool 76°F actually feels.
What to fix first
