When your AC stops cooling during a Port St. Lucie summer, indoor temps climb fast. Before you pay for an emergency call, here are the seven checks our techs run first — about half the no-cool calls we get in PSL are fixed by one of them.
1. Thermostat is set to COOL (not just ON)
Sounds obvious, but it's the #1 cause. If someone bumped it to FAN or HEAT, the system runs but never cools. Set it to COOL, drop the target temp 5°F below the room, and wait two minutes.
2. Air filter is choked with dust
In PSL the salt air, lawn pollen, and construction dust from Tradition and St. Lucie West clog filters in 30-60 days. A fully blocked filter freezes your evaporator coil and shuts cooling down. Pull the filter — if you can't see light through it, replace it.
3. Breaker tripped
Check the panel for the AIR HANDLER and CONDENSER breakers. Florida storms (and the daily PSL afternoon thunderstorms in summer) trip them constantly. Flip fully OFF, then back ON.
4. Outdoor unit is iced over
Walk outside. If the copper lines or the unit itself look frosty, you have an airflow or refrigerant problem. Turn the system OFF at the thermostat and let it thaw for 2-3 hours before running again — running it iced will burn out the compressor.
5. Condensate drain line is clogged
Florida humidity dumps a gallon+ of water per hour into your drain. When it backs up, the safety float switch kills your AC. Look for a small PVC pipe near the air handler — pour a cup of distilled vinegar in the cleanout to clear it.
6. Outdoor unit is buried in debris
Grass clippings, palm fronds, and dryer lint smother airflow over the condenser coil. Clear a 2-foot radius around the unit.
7. Vents closed in unused rooms
Closing too many vents raises duct pressure, drops airflow, and freezes the coil. Open every vent in the house.
Still not cooling?
If you've worked through all seven and the house still won't drop below 78°F, you likely have a refrigerant leak, failed capacitor, or bad contactor — all repairs we handle same-day in Port St. Lucie. Call (772) 230-COOL and we'll usually be on-site within 30 minutes.
